1. About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and ChessTrainer.ai, a company registered in the State of Wyoming, United States ("we", "us"), about your use of the website at chesstrainer.ai and the training app inside it (together, "the service").
By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms. When you buy Pro, you confirm it again by ticking the box on the upgrade page before checkout. Our privacy policy and refund policy are part of these terms.
2. The service
ChessTrainer.ai is a chess training app that runs in your web browser. It has five modules: coordinates, openings, middlegame, tactics and endgames. You can answer by tapping, typing or speaking.
- Voice recognition runs on your device, inside your browser, where the browser supports it. Otherwise your browser's built-in speech service does it: Google's in Chrome and Edge, Apple's in Safari. To improve recognition we keep short clips of some voice answers, about two seconds each, stored without your name, email or account ID and deleted after 90 days. See the privacy policy for details.
- The Stockfish chess engine runs on your device, inside your browser.
- The service is a training tool. It is not coaching from a titled player and we do not promise any rating gain.
3. Your account
- You must be 13 or older to create an account. We do not offer accounts to children under 13. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you.
- One account per person. Accounts are personal and may not be shared or sold.
- You can sign up with an email address and password, or with Google. Use an email address you can receive mail at: we send sign-in, billing and notice emails there.
- Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has access, tell us at hello@chesstrainer.ai.
4. Free and Pro
Free costs nothing and has no time limit. It includes Name the Square and Find the Square at every level, 3 openings, 3 middlegame lessons, 5 puzzles a day, 3 endgames, leaderboards and voice control. On Free, contributing the short voice clips described in the privacy policy is part of the service: answering by voice contributes them, answering by tapping does not.
Pro costs US$6.99 a month or US$49 a year and includes everything in the app: every coordinates drill, every opening with spaced repetition, every lesson and endgame, unlimited puzzles and Puzzle Sprint, and the "Help improve voice recognition" switch in Profile, which stops voice clips being kept.
The current list of what each plan includes is on the pricing page. We may add to either plan at any time. If we take away a major part of Pro during a period you have already paid for, you can cancel and ask for a refund of the unused part.
5. The earned trial
Train on 3 days in a row and you get Pro free for 72 hours. The trial is earned, not bought:
- We never ask for a card or any payment details for it.
- It ends on its own after 72 hours. Nothing renews and nothing is charged.
- It can be earned once per account.
- When it ends you are back on Free, with all your progress kept.
6. Subscriptions and automatic renewal
Before you pay, the upgrade page shows you:
- the price and how often you are charged: US$6.99 every month, or US$49 every year;
- that Pro renews automatically until you cancel;
- how to cancel online, in Profile, Manage subscription.
You cannot check out until you tick a box confirming that you agree to these terms and the refund policy and that you understand Pro renews automatically until you cancel. We record when you ticked it and which version of the terms you agreed to.
- Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year, at the same price, and your payment method is charged unless you cancel before the renewal date.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card number. Stripe emails a receipt for every payment.
- Prices are in US dollars. Sales tax or VAT is added at checkout where the law requires it, and the checkout page shows the total before you pay.
- If we raise the price of Pro, we email you at least 30 days before the increase applies. Your subscription keeps the old price until your first renewal after those 30 days, so you have time to cancel.
- If a payment fails, Stripe retries it for a short time. If it still fails, the subscription ends and your account moves back to Free. Your progress is kept.
7. Cancelling
You can cancel online at any time: open Profile, then Manage subscription. You do not need to email or call anyone.
- Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
- After that your account moves to Free. Your progress, streak and all free content stay.
- You can subscribe again at any time.
8. Refunds
The first payment of a new subscription is refunded in full if you ask within 14 days. A renewal is refunded if you ask within 7 days and have not used Pro content since it renewed. The refund policy explains exactly when and how. Nothing in these terms takes away refund or withdrawal rights you have under the law where you live.
9. Acceptable use
Please do not:
- use bots, scripts or engines to answer drills or puzzles, or to climb the leaderboards;
- scrape, copy or resell the service or its content, or bulk-download it in a way normal use would not;
- try to get around plan limits or payments, probe for security holes without telling us, or overload the service;
- pick a display name or send feedback that is abusive, hateful, sexual or impersonates someone else;
- use the service to break the law.
If you find a security problem, write to hello@chesstrainer.ai. We are grateful for reports made in good faith.
10. Content and licences
The app, its design, lessons, drills and text are ours. You may use them for your own training. Some parts come from open projects and keep their own licences:
- Puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database, released under CC0 (public domain).
- Chess pieces are the cburnett set, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.
- Stockfish is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3 (GPL-3) and runs in your browser. You can get its source code from the Stockfish project.
Your training data (answers, scores, progress) belongs to you. You let us store and process it to run the service for you, and to show your display name and scores on leaderboards if you take part.
11. Availability and changes
- We work to keep the service running, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of bugs. We may take it down for maintenance, usually briefly.
- Voice control depends on your browser. Chrome, Edge and Safari support it; Firefox does not yet, so there you answer by tapping.
- We improve the service all the time, which means features change. If we ever shut the service down, we will email you at least 30 days before, and refund the unused part of any Pro time you have paid for in advance, pro rata.
12. Closing an account
You can delete your account at any time in Profile, under Delete account, or ask us to by emailing hello@chesstrainer.ai from the address on the account; we do that within 30 days. Deleting the account cancels any Pro subscription at once, so it does not renew. The rest of the period is not refunded by that alone; the refund policy still applies. The privacy policy lists what is deleted and what is kept.
We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms. Where we can, we will tell you first and give you a chance to fix it. If we close a paid account for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund the unused part of the period.
13. Liability
We provide the service "as is". To the extent the law allows:
- We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits or lost opportunities, that arise from using or not being able to use the service.
- If we are liable to you for anything, our total liability is limited to the greater of the amounts you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50.
- None of this limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your rights as a consumer under the law where you live.
14. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
- If you have a problem, email us first at hello@chesstrainer.ai. We will try to solve it with you informally within 30 days.
- If it is not solved within those 30 days, either of us may take it to the state or federal courts located in Wyoming, United States.
If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, including any right to bring a claim in your local courts that those laws give you.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. For a material change, for example to billing or your rights, we email account holders at least 30 days before it applies. If you do not agree with a change, you can cancel and close your account before it takes effect.
