How the trainer works

Levels and the 80 percent pass mark, XP, streaks and the earned Pro trial, Today’s session, puzzles from your own games, voice games against Stockfish, voice control, billing and deleting your account, each in a minute’s read.

How training works

Six coordinate drills open the curriculum, each with its own ladder of levels. Name the Square and Find the Square climb from one quadrant to half the board, the full board, then flipped, mixed and timed. A round is 10, 20 or 40 questions. Score 80 percent or more and the trainer suggests the next level; below that you stay until it sticks. Free covers every level of those two and level 1 of the other four.

Every finished session earns XP: up to 10 points for accuracy plus 1 per minute played, up to 5. Wrong answers lower your accuracy but never cost XP. Other modules count the same way; your player level grows with total XP.

Streaks and the earned trial

Any finished session, puzzle or game against Stockfish counts as a training day, in your time zone. Train on consecutive days and the streak climbs. Miss one day and an automatic freeze covers it, once in any seven days: the streak survives, but the frozen day does not add to it. Miss two days in a row and it starts again from one.

A 3 day streak earns 72 hours of Pro, once per account. No card, nothing to cancel: every drill, opening, lesson, endgame and puzzle opens, then the account returns to Free with all progress kept. Reminders (email by default, push if you turn it on) go out once on a day the streak is at risk.

What Pro includes

Today's session

Today’s session is a plan of about ten minutes, built in your browser and the same for the whole day. On Free it is a round of Name the Square at your next level and up to three rated puzzles, with a streak block whenever there is a streak to keep.

On Pro it adapts: twenty questions on your weak squares when you have them, the opening reviews that are due, a lesson or endgame from whichever module is further behind, and two to five puzzles on your weakest theme. Each block saves on its own, so you can stop at any point and pick it up later. Say next, skip or stop to run it hands-free.

Puzzles from your own games

Enter your Lichess or Chess.com username. No password or token: the trainer reads your public games through each site’s API, the last 50 on the first visit and up to 100 on every later check. Stockfish 16 analyses them in your browser and keeps the moments where you missed a clearly better move, up to 3 per game.

Your games never leave the device. Only the positions are saved to your account: the position, the solution, the move you played and a link to the game, up to 200 puzzles. Remove account on the puzzles page or in Profile deletes the username and every puzzle made from it. Training them needs Pro; removing your data never does.

What Pro includes

Voice games against Stockfish

Pick a colour, a mode and one of 8 levels, rated about 800 to about 2400. Stockfish 16 plays in your browser. Sighted shows the board: tap or say your move. Blindfold hides it, with a short peek when needed, and you play by voice. Ask "where is my knight", "what is on e four" or "repeat the last move" and hear the answer.

Resign and draw offers are buttons, so nothing you say ends a game by accident. Free includes 1 game a day; Pro has no cap. Your last 30 finished games are saved as PGN. Games of 10+ half-moves keep your streak and earn 10 XP, up to 3 a day, never on leaderboards.

What Pro includes

Voice control

Tap the microphone in any drill, or turn on auto-start in your profile, and speak naturally. The trainer understands square names ("e four", "echo four"), moves ("knight f3", "castles kingside", "promote to queen") and commands such as next, repeat, hint, undo and quit. Recognition runs on your device where the browser supports it, otherwise through the browser’s own speech service.

Chrome, Edge and Safari support it on desktop and mobile. Firefox has no speech recognition yet, so voice pills there show No voice and every drill works by tapping instead. Text-to-speech, which reads prompts aloud, works in all modern browsers.

Squares

"e four", "E4", "echo four"
Names the square e4. Files can be letters or NATO words (alpha to hotel).
"light" / "dark"
Answers a square-colour question.

Moves

"knight f3", "night f three"
Plays Nf3 when it is legal.
"e4", "pawn e4"
Pawn moves.
"bishop takes c6"
Captures.
"castle", "castles kingside", "long castle"
O-O / O-O-O.
"queen h5 check"
Checks are understood and ignored if redundant.
"promote to queen"
Promotion piece.

Commands

"next"
Skip to the next prompt or puzzle.
"repeat"
Hear the prompt again.
"hint"
Ask for a hint.
"undo"
Take back the last move where allowed.
"quit"
End the session and see your results.
"where is my knight", "what is on e four", "list my pieces", "repeat the last move"
In a blindfold game against Stockfish: find your pieces, check a square, hear your whole position or the last move again.
"next", "skip", "stop"
In Today's session these start the next block, skip it or end the session. The runner listens on its own screens and the coordinates results page; inside an opening, lesson or endgame the module's own words apply.

Fix your microphone

Mic blocked means your browser is refusing the microphone for this site. Allow it in the site settings for your browser (steps below), reload the page and tap the mic again. Mic error usually means the speech service could not be reached: tap the mic to retry. Answers by tap always work.

Chrome and Edge (desktop)
  1. Click the lock (or tune) icon at the left of the address bar.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow.
  3. Reload the page and tap the mic again.
Chrome (Android)
  1. Tap the lock icon in the address bar, then Permissions.
  2. Turn Microphone on and reload the page.
Safari (Mac)
  1. In the Safari menu choose Settings for this website.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.
Safari (iPhone and iPad)
  1. Open the Settings app, then Safari, then Microphone.
  2. Choose Allow (or Ask), return to the page and reload.
Still silent?
  1. Check that the right input device is selected in your system sound settings.
  2. Close other apps that use the microphone (video calls, recorders).
  3. Run the Voice check on your dashboard to test it.

Voice and privacy

Recognition runs on your device where the browser supports it, otherwise through the browser’s speech service (Google’s in Chrome and Edge, Apple’s in Safari). To improve recognition we keep about two seconds of audio for answers it got wrong, plus a few correct ones, with the expected and heard answers and a rough device class. Clips carry no name, email or account ID, only train and test the recogniser, and are deleted after 90 days. Pro users can turn this off in Profile.

We also keep anonymous performance and error telemetry and masked screen recordings of the page (no audio, typed text and personal details hidden) to fix bugs, for 30 and 14 days. Never for advertising or profiling.

Billing

Pro costs US$6.99 a month or US$49 a year and renews automatically. To change plan or cancel, open Profile and choose Manage subscription: it opens the Stripe Customer Portal for your account. When you cancel, you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for, then return to Free with your progress, streak and all free content intact.

Your first payment can be refunded in full within 14 days: email hello@chesstrainer.ai from your account address. Prices are in US dollars; sales tax or VAT is added at checkout where required. Free stays free: 5 puzzles and 1 voice game a day, two drills at every level, 3 openings, 3 lessons and 3 endgames, with no time limit.

Read the refund policy

Deleting your account

Open Profile, choose Delete account at the bottom of the page and type DELETE to confirm. It happens straight away and cannot be undone. A Pro subscription is cancelled at once and not charged again; if it cannot be cancelled, nothing is deleted and the app asks you to cancel under Manage subscription first.

Deleting removes your progress, streaks, ratings, leaderboard places, saved games, repertoires, puzzles from your games, reminders and voice clips. Feedback you sent stays, without your account ID or email address. If you cannot sign in, email hello@chesstrainer.ai from your account address.
